British Values at Pinfold Street

In school, complemented by our school values of R.E.S.P.E.C.T., we actively promote the five British Values. These values are:

1) democracy

2) the rule of law

3) individual liberty

4) mutual respect

5) tolerance at our school

We reflect these values in all that we do. We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so that they grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults, who make a positive contribution to both British society and to the world. We encourage our children to be creative, unique, open-minded and independent individuals, who are respectful of themselves and of others in our school and wider community.

We debate and answer questions around British Values and this is evident in the key questions answered in RE lessons and in the weekly work we complete around Votes for Schools.


At Pinfold, we have an active school council who meet regularly to discuss issues affecting them in school. Each class has two representatives and they bring them issues, ideas and concerns from their class mates to regular meetings. The members vote for a Chairperson, Vice- Chair and Secretary. All meetings follow a set agenda and minutes are taken.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, school or the country are constantly reinforced at Pinfold Street.

Pupils are taught from an early age the rules of the school and our RESPECT values, which underpins all that we do. Pupils learn that these rules govern and protect us and of the consequences should rules not be followed. Pupils attitudes towards staff members and their peers are excellent and all pupils are proud to come to Pinfold.

Individual Liberty

At Pinfold, pupils are actively encouraged and supported to make choices. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for pupils to make informed choices, through the safe environment we provide.

The pupils’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development is well-developed in school. We encourage and reward effort and ‘going above and beyond’. We encourage children to have high aspirations for their futures and to be the best that they can be. Staff are positive role models for our children in school and this helps to develop the children’s understanding of our RESPECT values and of what is right and wrong. We aim to develop responsible and caring members of society who will be able to reflect on their experiences un school and use them to make informed choices.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of our values and our school. Through our assemblies, circle times and continuous provision lessons, children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. Children quickly develop and understanding and belief to treat others how they would expect to be treated and our SEND and Equality policies reinforces our commitment to valuing individuality and inclusion of all.


We actively promote diversity through our learning about different beliefs, faiths and cultures. We are a multi-cultural school and we embrace this; we value each other as individuals and respect our difference, learning about them on the way. We educate ourselves about faith and tolerance through our RE curriculum, assemblies with different religious leaders, continuous provision lessons and our weekly Votes for Schools lessons. Our pupils recognise how culturally diverse Britain is and that this is what makes the nation great.
